Opening the EP we are instantly plunged into the cavernous intro of 'The Beast', an epic deep tech-step number layered with pitch black atmosphere, spine-tingling trance-style riffs and hard-as-nails D&B breaks. More darkness commences with the heavyweight, neurofunk stepper, 'In To The Shadows' before we are introduced to Inphekt's haunting drum & bass reinterpretation of US, Neo-Goth Rock band, Sins Of The Siren's 'Ghost of Me'. 

We are inflicted with punishing neuro bassline pressure on 'Fallen Stars' next with it's combination of  twisted, Reese snarls and rock solid 2-step breakbeats. Title track, 'Something Sinister' lays down a complex series of intricately shifting beats and percussive elements which mutates from lurching half-speed BPMs to full-pelt D&B tempos on the switch up. Definitely one to check out if you love your dark, yet expertly crafted, sci-fi beats. 

The final trio of darkside drum & bass begins with the menacing, futuristic tones of 'Old Dark', an apocalyptic stepper crammed full of dense atmospherics and industrial beats. 'Filthy Fresh'  takes things on a more dancefloor orientated direction, yet still maintains the hard-hitting impact of it's predecessors before we reach the EPs conclusion by the ominous 'Off Key', a track steeped in otherworldly swells and dirges set to a relentless, stepping breakbeat and off-kilter, pitch-shifting drum-hits.

Inphekt proves once again that he is the master of sci-fi darkness with this epic collection of neurofunk gems. The 'Something Sinister' EP will prove be an essential addition to any fanatic of the darker side of D&B!!!

Just in time for All Hallow's Eve, Viral-Mental Recordings and resident neo-darkside pioneer, Inphekt present their latest selection of pitch black, neuro-terror tracks with the release of the mammoth 'A New Evil!' EP. 

Inphekt introduces us to the first of seven heavyweight drum & bass tracks, with the aggressive stepper, 'Internal Anger' which combines ominous atmospherics with a rock-solid two-step break and kick combo. It's closely followed by the equally oppressive 'Surrexit (VIP Mix)', which takes the original mix from the recent 'Tenebris' EP and layers a brain-scouring bass drone reminiscent of classic, late nineties era Bad Company tracks. 

Satanic themes form the basis of the menacing 'Are You The Devil', which sees uncompromising neurofunk flavours combine with sinister, whispered female vocals that'll send shivers up the spine of even the most hardened, horror fanatic. The sounds of 'Blackness' permeates next with it's intricate drum programming and dark, enveloping bassline. 

Title track, 'A New Evil' delivers a succession of punishing two-step breaks overlaid by a diabolic, twisted bass riff and doom-laden atmospheric notes. 'Dark Moon' closely follows in a more straightforward neuro D&B fashion, full of menace, but with it's feet set firmly on the dancefloor. The EP is drawn to a hauntingly perfect close by the the nightmarish 'Autumn Comes Again', which expertly ensures that no-one is left unshaken from experiencing Inphekt's latest collection of future darkside classics.

We are first subjected to Inphekts' punishing 2-step break and and bass drone workout 'Enders (Dedicated To Dr V)', which combines hard hitting drum programming with sinister dark atmospherics to devastating effect. 'Conjurning' up next expertly utilises sinister sci-fi flick samples alongside oppressive, Bad Company style synth growls set to an uncompromising drum & bass rhythm, creating a unique blend of unease and dance-ability.

The 'Tormentor' steps into the arena next and drops a frantically layered 2-step/amen break combo over a low, rumbling bassline accompanied by a menacingly hypnotic, twisting synth riff. Things get positively Satanic with the horror themed 'Infernum', which blends a scuttling percussive backing with haunting pads and a droning bass notes that'll possess all sound systems it encounters. 

Title track 'Tenebris' carries on the ominous theme by fusing, clanking industrial textures with monolithic bass dirges and clattering, layered breaks which receive a further kickdrum enhanced thump. The stepping 'Surrexit' closes the EP to the strains of a deliriously off kilter synth melody that would get IDM headz ears twitching, before introducing a killer bass riff straight from the depths of hell to perfectly bookend a rock solid selection of neuro D&B.

After building up a solid back catalogue of releases on a variety of drum & bass labels, veteran DJ, producer and regular Viral-Mental Records contributor, SkorpZ presents his debut album 'Darquid' to the world. Featuring ten heavyweight drum & bass tracks ranging from gritty dancefloor numbers to deep and atmospheric rollers.

The album kicks off with the teasingly built up, extended intro of 'Badlands (Alternate Mix)' which perfectly sets the atmosphere of a lone Wild West gunman with it's brooding guitar licks and solid breaks. 'Ups And Downs' up next takes us into full-tilt, drum and bass, dancefloor devastation with it's combination of invigorating pads, rolling breaks and a booming bassline, before being followed by the albums' title track, the moody neuro-bass driven stepper, 'Darquid'. A track which manages to combine rock solid, dark textures with a riff that can only be described as dubstep don, Burial's 'Street Halo' on steroids!!!

The menacing introductory strains of 'Never Sleep' threatens to deliver cold and clinical neuro-funk darkness before it ingeniously blindsides the listener by throwing a series of heavenly pads into the mix alongside contemplative male vocals. My personal favourite track of the album appears next in the form of the hauntingly atmospheric 'CloudWalkers', which incorporates an intoxicating blend of thundering breaks and nasty bass which are contrasted by a gentle, yet catchy as hell piano melody. 'Sleepy Hollow (VIP Mix)' follows a similar format of combining melancholic pianos with thundering drumrolls, as if the golden age of rave had never gone away.

Euphoric synth notes do battle with menacing bass notes on the frantically stepping 'Back From Reality' before we are taken on a classic, oldskool vocal fuelled rollercoaster ride with 'Sky Wars', which is destined to get anyone's feet moving. 'Arp Angels' takes things in a more electronica meets D&B direction with it's use of a massive throbbing bassline and techno elements. The album reaches it's conclusion with the original mix of opening track 'Badlands', which adds a succession of heavyweight, rolling drum-breaks and booming bass pulses to the original's formula.

On numerous occasions throughout the album, Skorpz proves that he has a gift for merging subtle, atmospheric touches with massive dancefloor orientated elements, which grants 'Darquid' a perfect Yin-Yang quality. In other words, an album that is just as suited for nodding your head to at home as it is to tearing up the dancefloor at a D&B club. Essential drum and bass listening!!!
