Motivbreaks latest release - Like 92 Retro / Random Rave EP

Track one of this 2 tracker EP, Like 92 Retro, is maybe one of the more  slower feeling releases you’ll get to hear reviewed on Strictly Nu-skool this year dear breakbeat’rz. A seductive mix of allegedly 140 bpm, but feels much more sedate, with a slower state of slowiness positively   exacerbated  by the blooms of half time cut up breaks . The tune rolls in nicely with a bit of rave crowd ambient noise circa Shelley’s or the lesser known Cornish equivalent at the Shire Horse pub near St Ives, fog horns with their inbuilt  anticipation of a drop on its way. Followed by a prodigyesque (when they were good…. come at me in the comments ðŸ˜„ ) dx bass line, blunted ragga vocal call and responses , euphoric synth swells moving into piano breaks, cut up diva samples and bleep era lead lines. Nice one Motivbreaks !

Track two, entitled Random Rave  continues along this more relaxed bpm tip which  does groove along in a very cool way indeed. Nu wave vocals sampled off your cool older sisters record collection set against an increasingly dense soundscape of familiar rave motifs, bleep bon mots,  crispy synth drums and  clipped Mackie breaks. Definitely  one for a more leftfield set when a DJ needs to freak out the squares and give the IDM chin strokers something to bop too. It’s guaranteed to be going into my next breakbeatadelic mixes  for sure.

All in it’s well recommended listening for all, inclusive of  the miserable anti-rave revivalists due to it's one foot in the past yet one foot forward psychoacoustic tempo bending balancing act ! Another great addition to the Greek (cheeky nod/wink to Pressure n Peri) contribution to the hardcore continuum.

Until next time dear breakbeat’rz. John Bass Scoops.

Bass Scoops Radio show on Toxic Sickness Radio - August #26 Skynside guest mix

Back once again with the ill behaviour. Latest monthly mix show is  up on the Toxic Sickness SoundCloud.

                                                          Listen Here

As always this one’s jam packed with breakbeat hardcore jungle tecky bassy goodness from start to finish!

Skynside in the guest mix slot has delivered 35 minutes of a dark sounding  happy hardcore into  techno-jungilism  smasher of a mix. Skynside is a producer that I’ve really liked for some time , check out his Bandcamp here too as his own productions are as wicked as his mixes, part of the Notts Hard Service crew , their SoundCloudis well worth a check as well for tunes and mixes I know you’ll love too dear breakbeat’rz.

Alongside that we’ve got some of the best new tracks selected from last months harvest of new  releases and a few I’ve slept  on  for too long . Some lovely picks “borrowed” from our very own Glowkid’s selections over on his fabulous  blog – I can’t recommend  checking his tune recommendations  enough – Thanks Peri re the Shan and Diogo Tunes. My recent post about the latest N4HC mini album was the entry point for one those super productive  bass music rabbit holes that turned up a “new to me” artist in Nic Baker , hence his wicked tune Needle on the Record being one of the choice digs of this months show imho. Rounding things off nicely amongst the   DnB tip end of the show  is a superb Codex tune remixed by Nectax dubplate, from the now available to order remix EP on Myriad alongside a few other “proper DnB” ( as I like to distinguish it by – a genre of   random mixture of liquid, tech step and dare I say sometimes reputable jump up lol) beauties.

Massive thanks to all the producers and labels  giving us the tip off on new releases and massive thanks to those generous with their promo’s too. As always readers, any of you lot want a tune playing out on the show do feel free to hit me up via  the Bass Scoops SoundCloud page . Until next time ….

The Rave Generation Lost Highway

It's been a while so, as a warm up for the Hall of Fame podcast, I scratched an itch and put together a little selection. It may be a bit rough around the edges but I prioritise enjoyment over perfection.

Some of you may get the Lost Highway reference. The image above is meant to allude to it and I think chatGPT did a pretty good job. Anyway, lengthy ramble over. Link to the 'mix' below plus tracklist

NOT 4 HUMAN CONSUMPTION: Wicked Cuts Vol 1.

The Not 4 Human Consumption label are proper. There, nuff said ! End of review. Oh , they’ve got a new record out as well. Now we’re done, thanks.

I cant’ end the article  there as Strictly Nu-Skool upper management will give me my marching orders sharpish, but to be honest,  that  brief first  sentence sums things up really well.

Not 4 Human Consumption or N4HC for those that know (and if you don’t know get to know) are a label that do things a little differently to the majority. They don’t seem to want to sell you music as their main priority, they seem more focussed on consistently providing some of the best and free underground hardcore leaning music about. Building a solid reputation over several releases , predominantly via their free to DL  option on their Sound cloud page ,  do check that out here.

Led by label head Robbie N4HC (I’ve got it on good authority that is his real surname so don’t start)  going since early 2023 with their first release Pulse by Prayer. They have a stack of tracks available  for you dear breakbeat hardcore jungilists, with tunes representing  some of the best modern interpretations  of the hardcore sound you’d hope to find. I came across them serendipitously   via an extensive  sound cloud algorithmic grail quest listening session,  first intrigued  more by the fact someone would have the imagination/audacity  to call themselves 99 Nissan Patrol than the fact I’d accidently discovered  a  sonic gold mine of free tunes for my monthly  Bass Scoops Radio show; and N4HC been on the show’s  insta-play list ever since.

By keeping close the their Instagram page I got wind that something bigger was happening and despite Robbie resitting my highly intellectual and skilled  advances to spill the beans  (basically beggy message sent late at night offering cash up front)  the word soon got out that not only was this going to be a rare   paid for release but it was going to be the labels first outing on vinyl. After a good 2  years of propping  up more than few budding hardcore dj’s collections I don’t think anyone can begrudge this foray into unabashed capitalism, plus those that were lucky to score  a copy  ( only 100 were pressed , limited to one per customer, sold out at time of  writing this blog) now have some lovely tunes to spin at a legit all vinyl night that would fit perfectly with  a set  of classics drawn from 91 to 95.

So to the release itself, 6 tracks all told, more than a EP’s worth too. Leading off with a big name indeed, Tim Reaper who the cliché “needs no introduction” was made for. Tim is a production machine , a prolific force in the UK jungle scene and it is a literal  blue-chip  level endorsement of N4HC’s calibre  that he has  provided  a track for their first vinyl releases. Alongside  the talented  Mr Reaper ( Future Retro London) are a mix of label veterans and N4HC newcomers. If you like this sound then well… you like this sound but imho there are no weak tunes on this release. Whilst writing this I’ve had it  on repeat and it’s hard to say which one is “the one” as us esteemed music critics (middle-aged man with a macbook…) are prone to do. Each artist brings something  different to the last and the label has put some time into programming this mini album to a very high standard.  It is great to hear the aforementioned 99 Nissan Patrol  (Bigtingrecordings) getting onto this, Cheff the Boy ( Duckland) , Bruk ( Exodus Records) and the currently super hot this summer for sure Gesture ( check his wicked release  on blog favourite   Torre, amongst others)  alongside the  delightfully  new to  me American artist Nic Baker from Philadelphia  who  comes with a lovely lovely  lovely tune called Solstice.

Check it out  at the link below, dear breakbeat’rz ,  well worth the investment for the digital’s alone and I’ll always lend you my wax for  your vinyl only  set at Rupture  if you need it, as long as I get a plus 3 on the guest list.

Shout out Robbie N4HC each and every time.

A1. Tim Reaper - Stylistics

A2. Cheff The Boy - No Cure for Hardcore

A3. BRUK - Make Way

B1. 99 Nissan Patrol - Undercover

B2. Nic Baker - Solstice

B3. Gesture - TAO TRONIC

Maximnum Airtime Presents MICHAEL CIGNARALE- Let Your Body Go

Maximnum Airtime Presents MICHAEL CIGNARALE 'Let Your Body Go', a huge anthem in the style of classic Hi-NRG plus an 89 Warehouse style remix and a remix from Knopha.

Michael is a legend in the LGBTQ club scene in China- DJ, producer and club promoter. 'Let Your Body Go' embraces the Moroder style 80s Hi-NRG Disco sound to exquisite detail and to top that, his '89 Medusa Club mix' is a pure warehouse groove a la Forgemasters and Marshall Jefferson!

'Coastal Highway' taps into the current trend of synth driven, disco rave with powerful melodic strings.

Finally, Knopha's remix of the title track ventures into deeper, experimental regions, stripping the original to the bare bones of a futuristic breaks/garage hybrid.

Stu & Nee - The Elusive Exclusive EP

The second of two sought after EPs by Stu Chapman and DJ Nee rereleased by Vinyl Fanatiks

'Music Is The Answer' flips the iconic house tune into an equally iconic Rave weapon with a stabby intro and loaded pianos, complimented by a midsection of classic old school Hoover mayhem.

'Rainbows' is equal parts atmospheric jungle and melodic Rave. The beat progression on this track is truly stunning, as is the gradual shift from ambient jungle aesthetics to an out and out. Happy piano crescendo.

'Gangster Boogie' is 'Tales from the dark side' meets 'pennywise', utilising similar sin stabs to the Tango and Ratty classic with a Pennywise worthy drop and a cook gangster rap vocal refrain.

'Just Like Boom' rounds out this excellent Ep with a stabby affair, lifted from the many popular hoovers, synths and FX of 1992 Hardcore and faithfully fashioned in a way that sounds like an unearthed DAT tape or acetate from rave history.

Dream Frequency Mix at 'High On Hope pres. Out There' (10th Aug.2024)

The 35-year-old established High On Hope returned for their last outdoor event of this year living and breathing the magic vibe of the Gisburn Forest.
A massive rave with an exquisite line-up of DJs such as Rob Tissera, DJ Faydz, Acid Alf and last but not least the man like Dream Frequency (a.k.a. Ian Bland) who went completely ecstatic among the others.
Suffice to mention that one of the first Dream Frequency releases ever was 'Live The Dream' back in 1990 - a homage to the iconic Blackburn rave.
Bland has been always heartful with this vibe and his latest set for the High On Hope went down a storm as expected!

" WHAT another MAGICAL night in Gisburn forest. Such a pleasure and honour playing for you Tommy - High on Hope, out there , it’s where it all began for all of us , the Blackburn Acid House , everyone played a blinder - Danny Dee, Acid Alf, Infared , Matty Robinson, DJ Faydz, Rob Tissera and most important you ace ravers !! Big love from Dream Frequency til we dance again.
P.S. Special awards to Lois Linklater for sorting Mr gatecrasher Angry man out !

VEAK - HIGH VOLTAGE EP - GHETTO DUB

Ghetto Dub regular, Veak ups his game once again with the 'High Voltage' EP

Buy Here https://www.junodownload.com/products/veak-high-voltage-ep/6707729-02/

'Rudeboy Sound' is a fierce, vocal Ragga Jungle roller with melodic depth and a bassline that adds weight to the melody.

'High Voltage' is an amen break driven freight train with shades of the late 90s Dream Team style.

'Fireball' is a slick, stabby stepper, made for causing serious damage at Boomtown and the entire summer festival circuit.

'Level Up' has absolutely nothing to do with a Tory party slogan and everything to do with sick bars, dope beats and big wubs that will shake the sound system!

Jem77- Forbidden Planet EP

A sought after slice of underground history gets an official rerelease on Warehouse Wax. Jem77's 'Forbidden Planet' EP is available on a very limited run of vinyl. You can buy the Vinyl here

The EP features two alternate versions of the massively popular 'Never Felt This Way', the remix and Hypermix. The former is a VIP of the original with a deeper feel that retains the energy of the original.

The Hypermix will peak the interest of any Oldskool Hardcore fan. Most, like me, won't have heard it before, a faster version with a nice variation of the famous piano riff.

The other two tracks 'Forbidden Planet' and 'Eruption' have a unique, progressive sound, breaking the mould of the typical hoovers and pianos for a euphoric mix of strings, techno influenced stabs and complex rhythms.

And if you like this, there's loads more Hardcore, Jungle and DnB on vinyl at https://shop.vinyljunkie.uk/es

Brian Johnson-The Second Company

Brian Johnson returns this August with his new album, 'The Second Company', following his 2022 release 'That Culture' on the Master Chef Music label. This album explores Johnson's techno influences across eleven tracks, featuring collaborations with Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and a remix by his long-time partner Organic Life.

The title track, 'The Second Company', opens the album with arpeggiated sequences, punchy drum machines, and a compelling vocal sample. It leads into 'Mortality', a track filled with cascading keys and sustained pads that build suspense. 'Sovereignties' delivers dark melodies and a dystopian vocal, setting a moody tone. 'Find Me' introduces acid influences over a powerful techno beat, while 'Rare & Beautiful' showcases a collaboration with Yasiin Bey, combining intricate keys and strong drums with Bey's nostalgic vocals.

'Spread The Word' is a high-energy track featuring a roaring 303 bassline, followed by 'The Get Down' and 'CA$H', which blend hip hop vocals with techno elements. 'Son of Sanford' and 'Don’t Tempt Me' explore the melodic side of Johnson's style, offering vibrant, psychedelic soundscapes. The album closes with Organic Life's remix of 'Rare & Beautiful', transforming it into a relaxed, broken-beat journey.

Born in Toronto to Jamaican parents, Brian Johnson rose through the local music scene by hosting and headlining events before establishing his own recording studio. He has produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered thousands of tracks for artists like Barrington Levy and Drake. His music blends deep house, dub, and techno, creating a distinctive sound that is evident throughout 'The Second Company.'

'The Second Company' adds to Johnson's impressive discography, embodying the essence of techno with its futuristic yet nostalgic sound. It reflects both the present and a longing for the past, making it a standout release in the techno genre.

The ‘The Second Company’ LP features eleven tracks and a mixed ‘continuous’ version.

Release Date: 22 August 2024

S.U.R.E – Here For You // Got Something E.P.

In our modern times music producers have clued into that  the best part of a tune to get the crowds attention   is the drop.  The purists out there amongst us may have mixed feelings about this psychoacoustic  “phenomena “but deep down   you sure  can’t deny the euphoric (see what I did there…)  surge of energy  a good drop gives you .  Well S.U.R.E have def got this  in mind with their cracker of a new release “Here for You”. It features on a double tracker of the inaugural release on their own label Super Uphoric. I am sure (for the love of  god stop this now …) readers of this blog will be familiar with the gents with the best kept facial hair in bass music since Longeez shaved  off his tache! Bursting onto the scene in 2023 with releases on the esteemed label  Hardcore Energy, Brick Sweat Records and a slew of  excellent  radio mixes and self releases ,S.U.R.E are top quality purveyors of feel good breakbeat ravey hardcore music.

S.U.R.E

I’ve been a fan since I first heard them and make a point of keeping up with their releases and mixes. I do think that “Here for You” is one of their best  tunes to date . The intro brings the energy right away, catchy bass line,  phone samples and the repeated refrain of “ I just want to feel the bass”,  for a tune the clocks in at just about 3 mins at least half of the tune is dedicated to that wonderful drop.  When that 303 line  signals the tune coming back in it’s time to hit repeat and listen again. This is a tune that so needs an extended club mix treatment , like all the tunes had back in the day eh? Wonderful stuff!

The tune on the flip “Got Something” is a slightly less frenetic affair. A class bit of 90’s warehouse rave nicely replicated to keep your head nodding and feet moving. On it’s own this tune perfectly fits with the lads discography, cheeky sample references to way back anthems  and a hypnotic synth riff that's made for  smoky rooms and strobes. However, “Here for you” is the one.  Please do check it out , links below , available  on a variety of platforms blah blah blah…   but somebody send me their  Shep Petibone’esque 7 minute club edit of this  soon please.
