Sempra - Set Me 3 / Dance With U

John Bass Scoops needs no encouragement to rep the sound of any Bristol (according to BC) UK based artist working in the bass n breaks arena . So what a proverbial gift from da gods to get an early listen of Sempra’s latest release - now out on his Bandcamp via  link below and of course on various streaming options.

LINK HERE!

It’s a self release on his own Bandcamp . An artist like Sempra has the stones/credibility/fanbase to pull this off “sans labelo Rodney” …as we say in the trade. (Editors note  - watching only fools n horses reruns doesn’t constitute modern music journalism Scoops). This two tracker is  described by the man himself as "paying a big large and in charge  homage to 90s piano rave and happy hardcore! "

With a good size back catalog  across jungle, UK Garage, DnB and  breakbeat genres dating back to 2019 Sempra is  no flash in the pan, he has a  certified proper repertoire to draw on. Releases on quality labels and support from big name DJ’s provide a reputational quality kite mark to the standard of his work, so I opened the promo with high expectations.

So, to the tunes, well first up we have Set Me 3. It is  a 90’s piano driven breakbeat  leaning hardcoreesque smasher. This tune ticks a lot of boxes for you all dear breakbeat’rz. We are treated to "almost" chipmunked vocals (this is a nice touch in terms of production over pastiche) ,with a refrain that gives the tune its name, skittery breaks, 4x4 kick, big piano chords and lead riff; and a catchy bass line. Nice stuff indeed.

Dance With U, on the “virtual” flip starts off as a more full on affair, just the right side of donk kick, heavily phased/akai’d breaks and a vocal hook that evolves from a pitched up take to the downright soulful. After a few listens , this was the releases tune of choice that drew me back in with its lovely almost indiscernible morph from a bit of a donk’y affair at the start  to a quite delightful and emotionally uplifting tune by the end. I could imagine this being a beautiful set closer to a fully luv’d up night dancing with friends somewhere sunny.

So there you have it, well recommended bizness, do check it out.

Until next time dear breakbeat’rz. John Bass Scoops.
