After Parallax Recordings' previous venture into rare 1992-1993 breakbeat hardcore with the excellent 'The Best Of Invention' double vinyl release, the label returns with even more oldskool gems, this time delving deep into the jungle vaults of 1994. Previously released on the legendary reggae label, Jet Star Records, and including two previously unreleased V.I.P. mixes. The Total Dark 'Tenement Yard Jungle / Jamaica' EP is going to be an insta-buy for any self-respecting junglist's vinyl collection.
First up we have 'Tenement Yard Jungle', a reggae tinged slice of tear-out jungle flavoured with rapidfire amen breaks and skanking bassline, paired with the opening lines of Jacob Millar's reggae classic and silky smooth, soulful female R&B vocals lifted from Total and Notorious B.I.G.'s 'Can't You See'. The 'VIP Mix' offers up a more rolling take on the original version to provide an alternative for all the selectors out there.
On the flipside 'Jamaica' provides us with an insane sample-fest of rolling, DJ Dextrous style amens, booming 'Sleng Teng' bass, 70's disco grooves and a plethora of Capleton, Buju Banton and 'Scarface' movie samples to add to the chaos. The 'Jamaica VIP Mix', comes in just as hectic as it's dancehall ragga infused forefather.
If you are looking for beautifully crafted, atmospheric rollers then you will be sorely disappointed with this release, however if your junglistic tastes veer towards the more bedroom produced, rugged and raw and sample heavy ragga belters from the Golden Era of jungle, then 'Tenement Yard Jungle / Jamaica' will be absolutely essential!!!
